NH is having a PRIMARY – Sarah P.

Summary: Dave Barry’s article in the Charlotte Observer, dated January 5, 2008, says it all. After all the ruckus over Iowa, and as citizens and political junkies remain affixed to their television sets for the New Hampshire primary, we know nothing. Dave Barry, a satirical blogger, jokes about the importance of Iowa and what it says about the possible outcome of the General Election. In a “special wrap-up and summary” of Thursday’s caucuses, Barry surmises that nothing can be assumed about the Election, even with New Hampshire’s delegates almost counted and ready to go.
Impact on the 2008 Election: I agree with Barry- the Iowa caucus says nothing about the General Election, and America can’t assume that, just because Obama and Huckabee walked away with an overwhelming majority, they’re going to be the nominees for their respectful parties. Additionally, I think Barry brings up a good point when he jokes about the differences between Iowa and New Hampshire. A lot of talk about “Evangelical Christians” vs. “common folk” has made it seem like each state is full of hugely different people. Really, we’re all just Americans, and I wouldn’t surprised if the messages of both Obama and Huckabee resonate asĀ  the voice of the Americans.

Focus Question: Do you think too much weight is placed on the importance of the Primaries? What does it say about our political system that the candidates are grouping individual states into stereotypes?
